Here is a profile on Elizabeth B. Scroggin, this year's art judge:

Elizabeth, known to friends as Libby, has been covering her world with scribbles, doodles, and paintings since she could hold a crayon. Her first set of oil paints was a gift on her thirteenth birthday.  After receiving her BA in Fine Arts from Auburn University, Libby has worked in various Art related jobs, including teaching Art in public and private schools, and classes and workshops for children and adults. Her work is being collected by people from New York to California. Most days she can be found in her studio at White’s Mill Mercantile, painting, or at William King Regional Art Center or The Arts Depot in Abingdon, Virginia giving tours, and teaching. However, if you’d like to visit, e-mail first- she might be hiking!

The Southern Appalachians have been a great inspiration for Libby’s recent acrylic and watercolor work. Though she does sketch and paint on location at times, many ideas for paintings originate in the photos she takes on hiking trips. Her work might be classified as expressive realism, using loose brushwork and expressive color.

“I guess you could say I’m one of those wistful dreamers who live in a magical world of my own. If I’m not creating something, I’m thinking about it. I am usually a painter of wilderness, but other things also creep into my work at times. My paintings are living records of my moods: awe, delight, peace, discord or balance. Though my paintings are less than photographic I use recognizable visual symbols so others can enter my thought-world. I try to construct paintings with a solid abstract foundation and build that to the degree of realism that expresses my mood.

For me painting is a conversation between artist and viewer, as Nature is a conversation between God and Man.”
